چکیده

The microscopic structure of the egg capsules of Atlantoraja cyclophora, a species endemic to the Atlantic region of South America, is presented in this paper. In a transverse section, the dorsal face of the egg case is 70 in width, and is subdivided into four layers. Ventrally, the egg capsule wall is 60 wide and composed of three layers. Both faces are covered by prickles which render the egg capsule surface striated to the naked eye.

Ichthyofauna Used in Traditional Medicine in Brazil

Fish represent the group of vertebrates with the largest number of species and the largest geographic distribution; they are also used in different ways by modern civilizations. The goal of this study was to compile the current knowledge on the use of ichthyofauna in zootherapeutic practices in Brazil, including ecological and conservational commentary on the species recorded. We recorded a tot...

A nursery site of the Alaska skate (Bathyraja parmifera) in the eastern Bering Sea

Elasmobranchs are of growing concern worldwide because they are threatened by increased fishing and habitat disturbances (Musick et al., 2000; Stevens et al., 2000). Characteristic life history traits of these fish include slow growth rates, late maturation, low fecundity, and long life-spans, all of which make them extremely vulnerable to increased fishing-induced mortality (Dulvy, 1999; Frisk...

Multiple paternity analysis in the thornback ray Raja clavata L.

Skates (Rajidae) are characterized by slow growth rate, low fecundity, and late maturity and are thus considered to be vulnerable to exploitation. Although understanding mating systems and behavior are important for long-term conservation and fisheries management, this aspect of life history is poorly understood in skates. Using 5 highly polymorphic microsatellite loci, we analyzed egg clutches...

Early life sensory ability-ventilatory responses of thornback ray embryos (Raja clavata) to predator-type electric fields.

Predator avoidance is fundamental for survival and it can be particularly challenging for prey animals if physical movement away from a predatory threat is restricted. Many sharks and rays begin life within an egg capsule that is attached to the sea bed. The vulnerability of this sedentary life stage is exacerbated in skates (Rajidae) as the compulsory ventilatory activity of embryos makes them...
